Retro Spelling Bee
Privacy Policy

Retro Learning LLC · Effective July 27, 2026
The short version: Retro Spelling Bee is built for kids, so we collect as little as possible — no accounts, no names, no emails, no ads, no tracking. Your child's handwriting is analyzed in real time to check spelling and is not stored by us, not used to identify anyone, and not used to train AI models.

Who we are

Retro Spelling Bee (the "App") is made by Retro Learning LLC, a California company. If you have any question about this policy or your family's privacy, contact us at [email protected].

Children's privacy (COPPA)

The App is designed for children and their parents. We do not require accounts and we do not knowingly collect personal information such as names, email addresses, phone numbers, contacts, photos, or precise location — from children or adults. We comply with the U.S. Children's Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA) by collecting no more information than is needed for the App to work, and by not retaining what is processed.

What the App stores on your device

Game progress, selected grade level, settings, and weekly practice goals are saved only on your device. They never leave it, and deleting the App deletes them.

Handwriting checking (our AI disclosure)

When your child writes a word, the App sends an image of that handwriting — along with the word being practiced and nothing else — to our server, which forwards it to Anthropic's Claude AI service to read the spelling attempt and rate neatness. This is the App's core feature. Important facts about this process:

Word pronunciation and feedback audio

Spoken words and encouragement in the App are pre-recorded or generated from text only (the practice word or a feedback phrase). No audio of your child is ever recorded — the App does not use the microphone.

Purchases and subscriptions

Subscriptions are processed by Apple through your Apple Account; we never see your payment details. We use RevenueCat, a subscription-management service, to confirm an active subscription. RevenueCat receives an anonymous identifier and purchase receipt data — no name or contact information.

Notifications

If you allow notifications, practice reminders are scheduled locally on your device. We do not send marketing push notifications.

Service providers

The App relies on these providers to function, each receiving only what is described above:

Technical data

Like nearly all internet services, our server briefly processes standard technical data (such as IP address) to deliver responses and prevent abuse through rate limiting. We do not use it to identify or profile users, and we do not store it.

What we don't do

Data retention and your rights

Because we don't maintain accounts and don't store handwriting images, there is generally nothing for us to retrieve or delete — your child's data lives on your device, under your control. Parents may contact us at [email protected] with any privacy question or request, and we will help promptly.

Changes to this policy

If our data practices change, we will update this page and the "effective" date above before the change takes effect. Material changes affecting children's data would be reflected in the App as well.
